Armstrong Baseball Team Battles Through Uncertainty
The Armstrong baseball team, like others across the state, is in limbo.
The COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to spring sports in Minnesota at least through May 4, with the possibility that there won’t be a 2020 season.
Falcons coach Brian Sobiech says, “One of my basic messages is we have to be prepared for anything. At Armstrong we pride ourselves on being mentally tough as an approach to the game and our lives because we believe that helps show our players what it takes to succeed in the future….the only things we can control is our effort in preparation and our attitude towards the situation.”
While the coaches have shared some thoughts on workouts players can do on their own, Sobiech stressed that they should follow social distancing guidelines and NOT get together in groups. And much of the contact with players is about more than baseball-related things.
“It’s important that our athletes see us and know we are thinking of them” during this unusual and difficult time, Sobiech noted.
Like many coaches, Sobiech knows there is a good chance there may be not be a high school baseball season this spring.
“I’m proud of my players that have kept preparing and not given up, and hope they get a chance to do something great. Either way I think they too will learn a life lesson about this when they look back on it.”
Sobiech acknowledged that numbers out for baseball in the Robbinsdale district and others in the area have declined in recent seasons, and hopes this trend doesn’t grow because of this spring’s situation. Even summer programs face an uncertain situation this year.
Sobiech hopes to do some outreach with youth programs to make sure baseball, and Armstrong baseball in particular, remains on young players’ minds.
