A group of middle school students in Golden Valley received a special visit from a group of South African singers on Tuesday.
Singers from the group 29:11 International Exchange visited Sandburg Middle School on Tuesday in celebration of Black History Month.
This visit is part of a four-month tour for the group, where they visit schools in various states to perform South African music and teach the students a little about their language and history.
Singers from the South African group 29:11 International Exchange perform for students at Sandburg Middle School in the Robbinsdale School District.
“Me being from South Africa, and understanding where I come from, it’s important that people of color understand their roots, their background, and it’s important for people to understand our situations, our current and our past,” said Brendon Adams, the artistic director of 29:11 International Exchange.
The group also performed the Black National Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” in the South African Zulu language.
In addition to Minnesota, 29:11 International Exchange plans to make stops in Wisconsin, Iowa and Maryland between now and Memorial Day.
