Snapology in Plymouth Offers STEAM Classes for Kindergarteners
As technology paves the way forward, a Plymouth STEAM camp is opening its doors to younger learners.
STEAM is science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Snapology in Plymouth offers programming to teach kids those elements with play woven in.
Beginning this week, Snapology’s Little Gators program will give kids ages 4 to 6 years old a chance to jumpstart that education. Benjin Vogel, Snapology’s operations manager, said these classes are about going with the flow.
“It’s a good chance for them to explore with their hands, for them to get sensory skills going. What do you feel, what do you touch, what do you see? How would you build something?” Vogel said.
Kids at the Little Gators Animal Explorers class learned hands-on about a wooded environment.
This week’s class is all about wild animals and their habitats. Vogel showed the class of kids examples of animals, their furs and the environments they live in.
After reading some stories about woodland creatures, kids got the chance to practice building places for them to stay with DUPLO blocks. By exploring animals, Vogel said they are learning STEAM basics.
“A little bit of building, a little bit of art, a little bit of learning,” he said.
By building a habitat for the animals, Vogel said they are learning to think critically about environments.
“It kind of strikes up that independence, but also gives them that creative spirit to be able to kind of think about what they want to do,” Vogel said.
Building Up Knowledge
This is mom Lisa Hegman’s first time bringing her two sons, Anders and Beck.
“They love animals, and they love DUPLOs and exploring,” Hegman said. “They’ve been thoroughly engaged this entire time and really enjoyed it.”
Hegman said this sort of programming matters because STEAM is a big part of what her kids will grow up with. It’s an added bonus that her kids like it, too.
“I think it’s the future of the world,” she said. “As little boys– they love science already.
Kids at the Animal Explorers’ session try their hand at building habitats.
Snapology is located inside Urban Air Adventure Park in Plymouth. The Little Gators classes are held every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. For the month of February, each class comes with a free hour of jump time in Urban Air.
Snapology also offers spring break and summer camps.
