Second Harvest Heartland Receives Large Milk Donation As Food Shelf Demand Surges
Second Harvest Heartland in Brooklyn Park received a large milk donation on Thursday, a donation the food bank says comes at a critical time.
Prairie Farms, which has operations in Woodbury, donated six pallets of shelf-stable milk. The donation comes as food banks typically see a decline in community food donations, but an increase in demand with kids soon to be home from school.
“We set a record last year of almost two million more visits to food shelves than the year prior,” said Lindsey Ochmanek, director of sourcing and demand planning with Second Harvest Heartland. “From a sourcing standpoint, demand continues to increase this year.”
Thursday, June 1, is also World Milk Day. The milk donated to Second Harvest Heartland will eventually help local food shelves throughout the northwest suburbs.
“This actually allows us to make sure we have the food and milk available to our neighbors that need it,” said Ochmanek.
