School Bus Strikes Child, Driver Leaves Scene
Brooklyn Park police are investigating an incident in which police say a 6-year-old child was run over by a full-sized school bus and the bus driver left the scene.
Police were called shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday to the west parking lot of Edinburgh USA golf course. Officers found the young child with leg injuries.
According to police, the child had been dropped off after attending Prodeo Academy, a charter school in Columbia Heights. The child had lower-body injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
“As far as we know at this time, the child had a broken leg and possible internal injuries,” said Brooklyn Park police spokesperson Elliot Faust.
Investigators learned the bus driver left the scene. It’s unclear if the driver knew the bus had run over the child. Police were later able to locate the bus and the driver, police said.
“We are evaluating all the facts and will consult with prosecutors to determine charges if any,” said Faust.
Police say the bus on the route belonged to Student Safe LLC.
The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting Brooklyn Park police in the investigation.
