Salvation Army Delivers Food, Warmth During Cold Snap
After experiencing the warmest December on record, Minnesotans are getting a rude reminder this week of how it feels to have bitter cold set in.
During this freezing spell, local organizations want to make sure that those without a home aren’t left out in the cold.
“Un-housed individuals that don’t have a place to go on a regular basis, the Salvation Army is a place that they are more than welcomed to come,” said Capt. Daniel Simmons of the Brooklyn Park Salvation Army.
A warm place to hang out on a cold day is just one of the services offered by the Brooklyn Park Salvation Army along Noble Parkway.
Tuesday morning, volunteers braved the cold and wheeled boxes of food out to more than a hundred cars that lined up for the organization’s drive-through food pantry, which is offered every week.
Each of the Salvation Army’s seven service centers in the Twin Cities will act as warming houses for those in need during normal business hours. For anyone who comes late, support will be available.
“If people come in the last minute and we are still here, we try to not just say, alright time to go,” Capt. Simmons said. “But instead say, ‘how can we get you to where you need to go?’ So that they aren’t just put out into the cold. If it’s another government agency or another space or a hotel, whatever that may be.”
Brooklyn Park’s Salvation Army is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
