Ruth Bittner Becomes First Republican To File for Hortman’s House Seat
Coon Rapids business owner Ruth Bittner has become the first Republican to enter the race for the vacant Minnesota House seat held by the late state Rep. Melissa Hortman.
Bittner joins three DFL candidates in the special election for the House District 34B seat.
“All Minnesotans are still shocked at the tragedy of her death. We appreciate her service and the dedication she brought to her role in serving this state,” said Bittner in a campaign press release.
This is Bittner’s first run for public office.
“I want to be a voice in the legislature that represents all people, and who is willing to reach across the aisle to negotiate for the good of all, even when issues are difficult,” said Bittner.
Bittner listed common sense budgets, public safety and restoring educational excellence as her top three priorities if elected.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Bittner began her career as a food scientist at Land O’Lakes before becoming a small business owner. Bittner currently works as a real estate agent.
House District 34B covers most of Brooklyn Park and portions of Champlin and Coon Rapids.
The special election will be held on Sept. 16 with the special primary election on Aug. 12. The candidate filing period ends July 22.
The three DFL candidates running are current Brooklyn Park City Council Member Christian Eriksen, former Brooklyn Park City Council Member XP Lee and Hennepin County prosecutor Erickson Saye.
