Plymouth’s Buzz Café Produces Picture Perfect Waffles
Life often presents us with difficult decisions. Say for instance, what to eat for breakfast.
But there’s a question that people have pondered for generations: pancakes or waffles?
“Pancakes are plain and blah,” said John Laroque of Buffalo. “Waffles you can add different things to them.”
“Pancakes are just, yuck. No, no no. No pancakes,” said Jasmine Branum.
Granted, Branum may be a little biased. She is the co-owner of The Buzz Coffee & Cafe, which opened in Plymouth along I-494 and Carlson Parkway two years ago.
“The food is phenomenal. Coffee is really good,” Laroque said. “And it’s supporting local business.”
People can buy coffee, breakfast or lunch at The Buzz. But what they’re really known for is waffles.
“Waffles are amazing, as we all know,” Branum said. “We started off with 37 and I wanted more. Honestly I wanted 500. I wanted a menu of 500 and my dad told me, absolutely not.”
So they whittled it down to a hundred waffles, ranging from traditional, gluten free, vegan, and everything in between.
“The staff comes up with ideas too,” said Mike Branum. “How about this waffle? How about that waffle?”
Mike is Jasmine’s dad, business partner, coworker, and waffle-maker extraordinaire.
“The best way I can describe working with my dad is, very annoying,” Branum jokingly said. “He likes to tell dad jokes all day.”
It’s part of the charm of this family-owned cafe, where they take great pride in making the most Instagram-worthy waffle concoctions you could imagine.
“She has great Instagram photos,” Laroque said. “I follow her on Instagram and it’s really cool.”
That coolness factor is no accident. Jasmine and Mike work to ensure that every waffle tastes as good as it looks.
“Make it picture friendly,” Branum said. “If somebody’s gonna pay money for something it should look beautiful.”
It is, after all, an instant attention grabber that generates buzz for The Buzz.
But for Jasmine, she’s not in this business simply to get Instagram likes. She’s fulfilling a lifelong dream while working alongside her dad. In the process, she’s also making other people happy.
“The Buzz means more than just a café,” Branum said. “It’s a family. Good times. Even in a pandemic you’re gonna laugh here, and it’s so important.”
And they may even help people settle the pancake and waffle debate once and for all.
“Even if you don’t think you want a waffle, at the end of the day, you want a waffle,” Mike said.
