Plymouth Celebrates Opening of New Fire Station
The Plymouth Fire Department celebrated the opening of a new fire station over the weekend.
The department unveiled Fire Station 2, located at 12000 Old Rockford Rd., on Saturday, June 1.
Construction on the station was largely completed last summer, but delays pushed back its formal opening ceremony.
The original Fire Station 2 was built in 1977. It was demolished in 2021 as the fire department transitioned to a hybrid staffing model.
“Everything we have done in this station is designed to be better fire department, better firefighters for you, our community,” said Plymouth Fire Chief Rodger Coppa.
The $21.5 million rebuild features dorms for firefighters, a new in-house operations center, and cutting-edge cleaning equipment.
This upgraded facility means firefighters can live and train at the station.
“Being able to do training in both stations is invaluable,” Coppa said. “Usually a lot of times you have to send your firefighters out of the city. We are able to keep them in our city and in response mode. That’s incredibly important.”
The new station was designed to better accommodate the safety and living needs of the city’s 24-hour staffing. Officials say this staffing model helps to reduce response time, especially for overnight calls-for-service.
Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting, the fire department opened the facility with a fire hose uncoupling ceremony.
