Plans for Permanent Daunte Wright Memorial Revealed
The city of Brooklyn Center‘s plans for a permanent Daunte Wright memorial were unveiled on Monday, July 17.
Wright was shot and killed by former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter in April 2021.
Potter said she mistook her gun for a Taser when she fatally shot Wright during a traffic stop.
Potter was found guilty of first and second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison. She was released this April.
As part of the $3.25 million settlement with the family, the city agreed to install a permanent memorial near the site of the shooting at 63rd Avenue North and Kathrene Drive.
The courts have since determined the distribution of the settlement, giving the majority to Wright’s son, Daunte Wright Jr.
Prior to the settlement, the city briefly considered removing existing the monument.
City officials revealed the plans at a community meeting on Monday.
Designs for the memorial include a metal portrait of Wright with a structure for memorial offerings, a placard and a flower planter.
The memorial’s design will be presented to the Brooklyn Center City Council on July 24.
Installation of the memorial is expected to begin in late August or early September.
