Pair of Teens Arrested in Brooklyn Park for Mail Theft
Two 17-year-olds were booked for mail theft Monday morning in Brooklyn Park after officers found hundreds of pieces of mail and packages in their vehicle.
A police alert said Brooklyn Park officers were called to Honeysuckle and Juniper avenues for suspicious activity at just before 2 a.m. Monday. The caller reported a vehicle in their neighborhood driving slowly with no lights and going through mailboxes.
Brooklyn Park police Public Information Officer Elliot Faust said officers found the two going through a mailbox on Kiwi Avenue North.
During that traffic stop, officers found several hundreds of pieces of mail and packages. The mail was addressed to dozens of different people.
“With that volume of mail that we recovered, there’s obviously a large number of victims involved. So, we’re going to sort through that today,” Faust said.
Faust said Brooklyn Park is not seeing a rise in mailbox thefts. But he said it is a good reminder to be careful when mailing sensitive items. That includes documents with personal information on it, namely checks.
Faust recommends dropping off items, such as checks, directly at the post office and taking advantage of tracking services when you use the U.S. Postal Service.
