Newsmakers: One Good Deed Prepares for ‘Scarf Bombing’
One Good Deed’s Michelle Christensen is collecting new or lightly-used winter wear for an annual event called “scarf bombing.” Volunteers tag winter gear and leave it in Minneapolis and St. Paul parks.
Scarf bombing is one of 12 events that Christensen organizes each year as a way to give people simple, easy ways to spread kindness. The events range from building Little Free Libraries to planting flags at Fort Snelling to picking up knitted hats and items that are given away to hospital patients. The nonprofit recently worked with the city of Golden Valley on a playground project.
“I’ve learned that people are much more kind than what we give each other credit for,” said Christensen. “There are a lot of dim corners, but collectively there’s a lot of bright light.”
Christensen and volunteers will collect the winter wear from a variety of drop-off locations and tag them with messages that read “I’m not lost, I’m yours.”
“That’s to indicate that it’s not lost, there’s intentional love there for someone who is unsheltered or in need,” said Christensen.
Then, volunteers will load up in a bus to drop off the tagged items in two Minneapolis parks and two St. Paul parks. She checks with the cities to make sure park workers don’t dispose of the items and also leaves messages at local shelters so people know the items are there.
The project is in its eighth year.
