Newsmakers: Hennepin Tech Celebrates 50 Years
Hennepin Technical College is celebrating 50 years this year. The city of Brooklyn Park declared Sept. 1 as the official recognition date for the college.
“Thirteen independent school districts came together with an innovative and creative idea to pool their resources and have one center for skilled trades and training in the community,” said Alison Leintz, academic dean at Hennepin Tech. “We first opened as part of a school district, but years later, we’re now a fully accredited college. That focus on skilled trades and workforce development hasn’t changed.”
The school was the first suburban college in Minnesota, and has been recognized for providing an affordable education for students in skilled trades, which are often in high-demand.
“The sense of community and success is something that doesn’t change throughout the decades that we’ve been there,” said Leintz. “It’s exciting to see there’s a common thread that permeates throughout our history.”
