Newsmakers: Brooklyn Park Girl Crowned Junior Miss Juneteenth Minnesota
LaMariya Swain, of Brooklyn Park, was recently crowned Junior Miss Juneteenth Minnesota.
“This is freedom day for Black people and I want everyone to know that this is inclusive,” said Swain. “Not only Black people can celebrate this holiday, but everyone can.”
To win the crown, Swain competed in a series of events on June 8 at Hamline University. She also attended workshops to learn about the significance of Juneteenth. The Miss Juneteenth Minnesota State Pageant’s focus is to create a platform that will provide its Black contestants educational, networking and career opportunities. The organization’s vision is “Rediscovering Our Culture and Redefining our Freedom.”
Swain says competing and winning the pageant was a way to honor her ancestors.
“I want to show that Black people can succeed when given the opportunity,” she said. “There is so much out there for us.”
Swains plans to attend festivals and connect with the community during her reign. She attended LoveWorks Academy and will enroll at Maple Grove Senior High in the fall.
