Music in Plymouth Provides $700K Business Boost

5:16 PM | Wednesday, July 2, 2025

For 53 years, families have been drawn to Plymouth’s signature event for a little outdoor music and a lot of fun.

“It’s got to be all about the fireworks, and of course the orchestra and the music, the different bands that they bring out,” said Joan Polley, a Plymouth resident.

Polley is one of the thousands who come to the Hilde Performance Center every July for the always popular, Music in Plymouth.

It’s a big event with an even bigger impact.

“Music in Plymouth, it’s a huge deal in Plymouth,” said Katie Langland, destination marketing coordinator for Hello! Plymouth. “It brings in over 15,000 people and generates an economic impact of over $700,000.”

It’s Langland’s job to let people know about what’s happening in the city and, hopefully, keep them coming back for more.

“Plymouth has never had a destination marketing organization before, and so it’s super exciting,” Langland said. “It’s an opportunity for residents to know what’s in their own backyard, where they can go, support our local businesses.”

People claim spots on the Hilde Performance Center lawn as early as 7 a.m. on the morning of Music in Plymouth.

Business Impact

One of the longtime vendors at Music in Plymouth is Honey & Mackie’s ice cream shop.

“Music in Plymouth is one of our favorite events of the summer,” said Suzanne Varecka, owner of Honey & Mackie’s. “It’s a perfect day weather-wise for ice cream, viewing fireworks, listening to some music and community gathering.”

This is the 11th year Honey & Mackie’s will serve up their homemade ice cream at the Hilde, and Varecka notices a tangible impact.

“We do see about a 10 percent increase shortly after this, where we’re going to get customers who had a chance to taste us and try us out at Music in Plymouth and then come to our storefront, which is awesome,” she said.

Music, family, fireworks and ice cream. It’s a summer tradition that hits the right note.

“The families together, the little kids running around, having a great time. It’s just, it’s the perfect day today,” added Polley, who’s attending the event with eight family members.

Meanwhile, Honey & Mackie’s will donate 25 percent of its event sales back to the Plymouth Civic League (which organizes Music in Plymouth), to help bring more events to the city.
