Maple Grove to Expand Pickleball Courts

5:59 PM | Wednesday, December 15, 2021

Pickleball is a fast-growing sport across the country and it’s picking up interest and popularity in Maple Grove. A growing sport that has the city moving ahead with plans to expand court options.

Right now there are a handful of places to play the social and competitive sport in Maple Grove including Central Park. During the winter months, Pickleball players make use of the gym at Maple Grove Middle School.

Larry Huff is one of many avid Pickleball players who says they need more indoor and outdoor courts.

“We’ve had over 100 people in here and that gets to be a bit much so it’s really important for us to figure out a way to get more courts and it seems to be growing,” said Huff.

Even during the pandemic, players were staying active. But if there’s another school shutdown there won’t be a place to go for those who play in the winter months.

While there are no current plans for indoor Pickleball courts, some outdoor ones are in the works to address the need.

More Pickleball Courts

In 2019, the Maple Grove Park Board approved a feasibility study for a new Pickleball complex. That study took into consideration community input, multiple concept plans, and implementation costs.

It’s a vision that is moving forward now and will likely take shape at Lakeview Knolls Park with an expected construction start date of next summer or fall.

James Klande has been playing Pickleball since 2012 and he’s one of many looking forward to the additions.

“We’re really happy to see it coming to fruition. They’ve got a consultant now and we’re laying out courts and hopefully by next year we should have some courts.”

Courts that will provide more options and hopefully keep more players coming back for more.

“It’s a sport you’re going to play for a long time. People just absolutely love playing,” says Huff.

“It keeps people young when you’re getting to be up in my age,” Klande adds.

The Maple Grove Parks and Recreation program offers Pickleball all year-round and multiple times a day.  All are welcome to join.
