Maple Grove Police Talk about “Slowpokes Law”
Starting August 1, drivers who are driving slower than the speed limit must stay out of the left lane.
Maple Grove Police say there’s a bit of confusion about this law. You can still drive slower than the speed limit, but you have to stay out of the left lane. The new law is also not permission for drivers to drive as fast as they wish in the left lane.
“One of the big questions is, ‘If I’m at the speed limit, can I be in the left lane?’ It is not that if you are in the left lane to drive as fast as you want or be will over the speed limit. That is not what the law was designed for,” said Sgt. Dan Hamann, with Maple Grove Police. “It’s to keep the slower driver under the speed limit out of the left lane.”
Maple Grove Police as well as State Patrol will be watching for violators of this law within Maple Grove’s city limits. The law has an impact on major Highways like 610, 494, and 694.
