Local Businesses Provide a Little Extra Sweetness for Mother’s Day
Local businesses are using the COVID-19 pandemic to try to provide a little extra sweetness to moms on Mother’s Day. Places like Valley Pastries in Golden Valley and Sugar & Spice Sweetery in Maple Grove have put together fun, tasty options for mom during these difficult times.
“We’re kind of on our own front line. We’re giving people doughnuts,” said owner Alex Loosbrock.
For Mother’s Day, Valley Pastries is offering a box of nine specially decorated doughnut holes for $15. It started up online ordering a couple weeks ago.
“It’s neat to see 35 people all six feet apart all standing around waiting for doughuts,” said Loosbrock.
Sugar & Spice Sweetery, meanwhile, is offering “breakfast in bed made easy.” The Maple Grove store is selling a mimosa and sweet rolls kit for $38. Customers can choose between four caramel or cinnamon rolls, plus they receive a bottle of bubbly and orange juice through its sister store next door, Rock Elm Tavern, which is offering a Mother’s Day brunch curbside pickup as well.
Growlers for Mom
Under Pressure Brewing in Golden Valley also has a special treat for mom that doesn’t involve flowers.
“We have just as many women come in here as we do guys. It doesn’t always have to be flowers,” said Lori Ertl, co-owner of Under Pressure Brewing.
It’s selling special Mother’s Day merchandise, plus growlers (64-ounce glass jugs), 750-milliliter bottles, and crowlers (32-ounce aluminum cans) for mom. Under Pressure offers a selection of 24 different beers and 30 different blends, including its popular bloody mary blend, the “bloody dragon.”
“We have so many different flavors, we have everything from fruit to the medium to the bitters to the IPAs to the darks. We have everything to hit everybody’s taste,” said Ertl.
And if customers say “Mama Mia,” Ertl says they get $2 off their purchase this Mother’s Day weekend.
