Gunman Surrenders After 11-Hour Standoff with Maple Grove Police
After nearly 11 hours of negotiations, a gunman surrendered inside his Maple Grove home after he initially was seen walking down a neighborhood street pointing a firearm at people and firing the weapon at one person, police said.
Police were initially called to a residential neighborhood in the 13200 block of 90th Ave. N. at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Neighbors in the area were eventually evacuated for their safety.
The suspect surrendered inside his residence at 6:30 a.m. Monday.
According to Maple Grove police, officers attempted to approach the gunman, who refused to comply before he entered his home.
“Officers attempted to negotiate with the individual who refused to exit the home,” said Maple Grove police Cmdr. Adam Lindquist in a press release. “Further investigation revealed the subject had discharged his firearm toward a citizen.”
Police obtained a search warrant and tactical and negotiation teams from the Maple Grove and Plymouth police departments were deployed.
Following lengthy negotiations that required numerous law enforcement agencies, the situation was resolved peacefully.
No one was injured during the ordeal.
In addition to Plymouth police, Lindquist said the incident required support from New Hope, Crystal, Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, St. Louis Park, Hopkins and Rogers police departments, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the Maple Grove Fire Department, and North Memorial Health emergency services.
The suspect is being held on felony 2nd-degree assault and threats of violence charges, police said.
