Future Maple Grove School To Be Called Aspen Ridge Elementary
The newest edition to Osseo Area Schools, an elementary school in northwest Maple Grove, now has a name: Aspen Ridge Elementary School.
The school district invited the community to help name the new school on Arbor Ridge Parkway. In a school board meeting in late September, Community Relations Director Kay Villella shared that 1,298 community members participated in the feedback session. Of those, 483 thoughts were shared. Staff, parents, community members, alumni and students were among those who shared thoughts.
A committee looked through those suggestions in September, then submitted a preferred name to Superintendent Kim Heil. She explained that the name selected has an indigenous connection. “Aspen Ridge” also refers to the street its on without using the popular “Arbor” term seen frequently in Maple Grove.
“The Aspen Tree species is the most common in Minnesota,” Heil told the board. “It is the first to grow in places of change. It is also indigenous to the city of Maple Grove, which was fascinating.”
After Heil’s presentation, the board voted unanimously to approve the new name.
School leaders also shared an update on the building’s construction, saying it is on budget and on track to open in fall 2026. It will be the district’s first two-story elementary school.
Next, the district is looking for the school community’s feedback on the school mascot. Future families were asked to share ideas and logos are being created with those ideas.
