Don’t Give up on the Garden… Just Yet
The skies are cloudy and the air is chilly, but you don’t have to put your garden to bed, at least not yet. Fall gardens can be pretty spectacular with sunflowers, zinnias, mums and rudbeckia.
“Now is a great time to plant and there’s so many fall colors,” said Donna Atallian with Lynde Greenhouse & Nursery.
Atallian suggests putting autumn flowers in pots. There are many annuals that will produce hues of gold, red and purple. She took a large container and filled it with mums, celosia and ornamental kale. The flowering kale will not only bring a lot of color, but will last long, even when the temperature drops.
“They have different colors that they come in but as the fall changes it tends to get even brighter, and prettier and those will actually last until the fall,” explained Atallian.
Atallian also suggests adding the pots directly into the container, instead of planting the flowers in soil. That way you can switch up the pots for variety.
Lastly, watering is key if you want your amazing autumn garden to last.
“You’re not going to need as much water for the fall colors. The kale doesn’t need as much, your zinnias are a bigger leaf, so that’s going to need more and if it’s going to be in the 70s, you’re going to need to water every day,” said Atallian.
Gardeners can also save some money by planting so late. That’s because many retailers are marking down plant prices on annuals.
