Daunte Wright Memorial Construction Begins in Brooklyn Center
Construction began Monday for a permanent Daunte Wright memorial in Brooklyn Center.
The memorial will be located at the intersection of 63rd Avenue North and Kathrene Drive. That’s the spot near where Wright was shot and killed by former Brooklyn Center officer Kim Potter during a traffic stop on April 11, 2021. Potter said she mistook her firearm for her Taser when she fatally shot Wright.
Potter was convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison. She was released in April.
Designs for the memorial include a metal portrait of Wright, a tribute display and a flower planter.
During construction, there will be a full closure of Kathrene Drive by the intersection.
The project is expected to take at least six weeks to complete.
