Business Matters: Papa Hawks Sports & Collectibles Expands
A revival of sports memorabilia and sports card collecting has prompted an expansion of Papa Hawks Sports & Collectibles in Golden Valley.
“Vintage is really, really hot. It’s the hottest I’ve seen it in years,” said owner Mark Hochstaetter.
The business just completed a more than 1,500-square-foot expansion.
“The last couple of years have been really, really good,” explained owner Hochstaetter. “We ran out of room.”
The expansion allows for more autograph photos and portraits to be on display.
There’s currently a shortage of new sports trading cards and Hochstaetter doesn’t really know why.
“So you’ve got to really be on top of it and order more than you need in order to get what you think you are going to sell,” said Hochstaetter. “Then, sometimes we don’t get anything.”
Hochstaetter says he’s also seeing more kids come into his store, which is good for future business.
“They’ll come in ask me, ‘do you have a David Robinson?’ which really surprises you because he hasn’t played in 20-30 years,” said Hochstaetter.
