Brooklyn Park’s Flava of Soul Serves up Food, Drinks, Great Vibes
When people think of Brooklyn Park, ‘flavor’ and ‘soul’ aren’t usually the first things that come to mind.
Jacob Brooks is on a mission to change that.
“We came to this community to try to bring something different,” said Brooks, owner of ‘Flava of Soul’ restaurant. “There’s not a lot in Brooklyn Park, so that’s something we wanted to bring, and a buzz we wanted to create in the community.”
Brooks is one of the owners of Flava of Soul, which opened in December. “
“A lot of the stuff that was similar to this was maybe over in Minneapolis somewhere, so we wanted to give the local community something, some type of different food,” he said.
The restaurant, which is located at 8578 Edinburgh Centre Drive in Brooklyn Park, serves up the type of food known to bring people comfort.
Some of the most popular main dishes include ribs, fried catfish and jerk chicken wings.
Side dishes include items like cornbread, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and collard greens.
With a menu packed with mouth-watering items, it’s no wonder why things have gone well in the four months they’ve been in business.
“With a lot of the stuff that’s happened in the cities, and maybe some of the shootings and stuff like that, we just wanted a safer place for people to be able to come to,” Brooks said.
In other words, Flava of Soul isn’t designed just to be a sit-down restaurant where people eat their food and go.
The idea is for it to be more of a lounge atmosphere where people can relax with a drink, play darts, listen to some of their favorite music, and enjoy a menu consisting of soul food, barbecue and other classics.
“We encourage everybody to come try it,” Brooks said. “Everybody that comes to eat our food enjoys it and comes back. And it’s a great, fun atmosphere. We look forward to more people coming out.”
