Brooklyn Park Police Warn of Mail Thefts Due to Tax Documents
Brooklyn Park police are warning residents about mail theft during tax season.
Police say thieves will try to obtain personal information delivered to mailboxes. That includes W-2 forms, 1099s, and stimulus checks.
Brooklyn Park has seen a recent uptick in mail theft from residential mailboxes around the Northwoods and River North neighborhoods.
Police say there are a number of tips for avoiding mail theft.
“The best tip is get a post office approved lockable mailbox, that way your mail is secure after its delivered, as well as don’t put outgoing mail to your mail. You should always just bring that to the post office or use a blue post office boxes,” explained inspector Shane DuPaul with the Brooklyn Park Police Department.
DuPaul also suggests being timely by remembering to get your mail.
If you see suspicious activity around a neighbor’s mailbox, call 911, DuPaul said. Photos and videos are also helpful to law enforcement, he said.
