Brooklyn Center Schools Change Start Times

4:10 PM | Thursday, May 16, 2019

A significant change will impact students in the Brooklyn Center school district come next fall. School start times will be changing. Right now the school day for elementary aged kids is seven hours. Administrators say a school day that long was causing kids to have a hard time focusing at the end of the day, and it was creating more behavioral problems.

When Students Will Start

In the fall, elementary school students will switch to a 6 hour and 20 minute school day. They will start their day at 7:45 a.m. and end their day at 2:05 p.m.

Middle and high school students will start an hour later at 8:45 a.m. and end their day ranging from 3:20 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. Administrators say these new start and end times are more beneficial to all students involved.

“Traditionally in previous years, the elementary school starts later and your secondary building middle and high school will start first,” said Carly Baker, Brooklyn Center School Superintendent. “Developmentally that is the opposite of what research tells us developing adolescents need. Middle and high school aged students require more sleep.”

More Opportunities After School

Shifting school schedules also means before and after school care will change too. The district will now be able to offer a hot breakfast to students instead of the grab-and-go breakfast food they are currently offering. The hot breakfast will be more nutritious than the ones they are currently offer. Also, they will now offer a dinner option to elementary school kids too. The dinner program currently serves anywhere from 80 to 150 students in middle and high schools.

The change will also allow for more students to be enrolled free of charge in after school programs.

Bus schedules will also change. Currently, if a student lives .92 miles from the school, they are considered within walking distance from the school. Starting next fall, students will be considered within walking distance if they live .48 miles from the school.
