Brooklyn Center Lawmaker Pushes to Lift Limits on Helping Voters
Rep. Samantha Vang, DFL-Brooklyn Center, is pushing for a provision that would lift limitations on the number of people someone could help assist at polling places. The Minnesota House approved the provision in the State Government Budget Bill.
Vang has been working on this change and CCX News spoke with her about it earlier in the session.
“This limitation at the polls is a violation of the Voting Rights Act,” said Vang.
Under state law, a voter who needs assistance because they cannot read or write English can get the help of anyone the voter chooses with certain exceptions. However, no one can help more than three people fill out their ballots. Vang’s measure would remove that limit.
The provision faces an uncertain future. It still needs to pass the Senate.
