$10,500 Worth of Toys Going to Domestic Violence Shelters
An annual tradition since the late 1980s has turned into the largest toy purchase yet for Twin Cities domestic violence shelters.
David Dumas, owner of Diamonds and Gold Jewelers, has organized the toy drive for the past 36 years. This year he led the charge of 12 volunteers who purchased $10,500 worth of toys at Mills Fleet Farm in Brooklyn Park.
Dumas credits the Northwest Area Jaycees, the Rotary Club of Crystal-New Hope-Robbinsdale and others for their financial contributions.
“Without their help, we wouldn’t be able to do it,” he said.
All the toys will go to six domestic violence shelters around the Twin Cities. For Dumas, making a difference like this can get quite emotional.
“We had a really nice story a couple years back where one of the mothers who received a toy couldn’t believe we were buying the toys again. And she didn’t know what she was doing for Christmas that year. And she said it made a big difference,” recalled Dumas. “It’s just really neat to make a difference in someone’s life.”
This year’s purchase turned out to be the largest amount they’ve ever bought.
“We have a lot of really cool people help us,” said Dumas.
The toy drive takes donations all year long. For more information, contact Diamonds & Gold Jewelers.
