Mayor’s Minutes: Plymouth’s Jeff Wosje
Plymouth Mayor Jeff Wosje told CCX Media’s Dave Kiser about some changes coming for the city’s fire department: recruitment of new paid on-call firefighters and a reconstructed fire station.
The city will host a hose de-coupling (akin to a ribbon-cutting) at the newly-rebuilt Fire Station 2 (12000 Old Rockford Road) on Saturday, June 1 at 9:00 a.m., followed by an open house.
The new station features more living space and on-site training facilities, as well as an emergency operations center.
Recruiting Firefighters
Wosje also pressed the importance of the city’s upcoming recruitment effort to attract more paid on-call firefighters.
“We have teachers, (people) from all walks of life, financial advisors, parents, they all fill these roles to serve in an emergency,” said Wosje. “If we have a fire at a house, we need more than just those who are staffing, we need additional firefighters to come out and work on that.”
Paid on-call firefighters need to be 18 years of age or older, live within eight minutes of a fire station, and be able to respond should the call go out for more firefighters. The application period opens May 13, and applications are due by June 30. The fire department will also host open houses on June 13 and 20 for more information.
Walk With The Mayor
Mayor Wosje also promoted the upcoming Walk With The Mayor event at Plymouth Community Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1. It’s the city’s kick-off the the city’s defense of its title of best in the county from last year’s Step To It Challenge. The idea is to get people out and getting them active.
“It can be gardening–any kind of work or activity,” said Wosje.
