City of Plymouth Plans Reconstruction of Plymouth Boulevard This Summer
A road reconstruction project along Plymouth Boulevard near Plymouth’s city hall and ice arena will dramatically change the streetscape over the course of the next several months. City officials say the project will include street reconstruction and the installation of four new roundabouts on the road at intersections between Rockford Road and Highway 55.
“This project will include a lot of improvements to really increase the walkability of the City Center area,” said City Engineer Mike Payne. “The roundabouts (will) improve the crossing safety, as well as major trail improvements along the corridor.”
Roundabouts Safer for All
Payne said the roundabouts are a safer option for everyone who uses the road.
“Vehicles don’t have to stop at the intersection, they can push more traffic while maintaining safety,” he said. “It reduces conflict points at the intersection, improves safety for pedestrians by decreasing the distance of the crossing and allowing them to only look for traffic in one direction at a time.”
The city plans to phase the road closures and detours but will not cut off access to any businesses or city hall, the ice arena, or the Hilde Performance Center during the length of the project, which won’t wrap up until late fall.
“It is always a struggle upfront to plan these major improvements on a heavily traveled corridor,” said Payne. “That’s why we really put forth the effort to try to phase this project, develop detour routes, to make sure we are serving the public while we make this needed improvement.”
