West Lutheran’s Josh Nelson Wins State Alpine
West Lutheran High School’s Josh Nelson captured the first state title of the winter sports season Tuesday, winning the boys’ state Alpine ski championship at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
Nelson skied his two runs in a combined time of 1:14.33, three-tenths of a second faster than runner-up Cash Jaeger of Stillwater.
The senior finished as runner-up a year ago and is the third Nelson to ski for Plymouth-based West Lutheran, joining older brothers Sam and Isaiah.
Josh is the first individual state champion in school history.
Wayzata’s Jaggen Qie finished fifth in the boys’ race with Simon McMahon of team runner-up Benilde-St. Margaret’s coming in eighth place.
Sonja Pendergast placed seventh in the girls’ race.
