Wayzata’s Koenen, Swensen Win State Wrestling Titles
Four wrestlers from the northwest suburbs advanced to championship matches in the state class AAA individual tournament.
Wayzata’s Luke Koenen (121 pounds) and Logan Swensen (133 pounds) emerged as state champions.
Charlie Petit (160) of Wayzata and Ben Schultz (215) of Maple Grove finished second.
Koenen broke open a close match, pulling away late for a 10-5 win over Lawson Eller of New Prague in the 121-pound final.
Koenen placed third last season.
Swensen’s 133-pound championship match against Michael Olson of Albert Lea went down to the wire, with Swensen scoring a late takedown to win 3-2 after placing second last season.
Petit’s hopes for a third Wayzata championship fell just short, as he lost 3-1 in overtime to Terae Dunn of Eden Prairie in the 160-pound title match.
Schultz had an overtime win over second seed Dominic Heim of Shakopee in the semifinals before falling 8-0 to unbeaten Quin Morgan of Mounds View in the final.
Totino-Grace’s Cy Kruse capped a dominant season with a pin in the championship match of the 215-pound weight class in class AA.
His teammate Jackson Refsnider lost in the 121-pound final in AA.
