Wayzata Wrestlers Fall to STMA in Section Final
The Wayzata wrestling team has closed the gap against longtime power St. Michael-Albertville in recent seasons, but STMA isn’t ready to give up its throne.
The top-seeded Knights beat second seed Wayzata 39-23 in the Section 5AAA championship match Saturday at STMA.
While Wayzata is formidable in the lower weights, STMA is even stronger.
They built a 27-3 lead, winning six of the first seven matches.
Wayzata stormed back, and with back-to-back pins from Dominic Heim and Chase Ullom at 182 and 195, the Trojans pulled within striking distance at 30-23.
The Knights got the clinching win at 220 when Ethan Yantes scored a late takedown to edge Gage Opp 4-3.
STMA went on to beat section six champion Waconia to advance to next week’s state semifinals.
