Wayzata Wins Section 5AA Girls Swimming Title
The Wayzata girls swimming and diving team won a section title for a 17th consecutive season Saturday, capturing the Section 5AA championship.
The Trojans won all but two events and qualified athletes in every race, plus diving.
Defending state 100 yard butterfly champion Claire Reinke won that event with a time of 54.77 seconds and also won the 200 yard Individual Medley and was a gold medalist on two winning Trojans’ relay teams.
Maple Grove’s Libby Bakker won the 100 yard backstroke and was runner-up to Reinke in the 200 IM to qualify for state in both events ansd was part of a Crimson relay team to also make state.
Other local state qualifiers included Champlin Park for their runner-up finish in the 400 yard relay and Park Center diver Maya Woods who finished fourth.
Wayzata finished with 680.5 team points with runner-up Maple Grove at 407.5. Champlin Park finished third of eight teams with Osseo coming in sixth place, Park Center seventh, and Cooper eighth.
The state girls’ swimming and diving meet takes place Wednesday through Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
