Wayzata Girls Hockey Beats Armstrong/Cooper in Section 6AA
The Wayzata girls hockey team dominated the first period, then held off an Armstrong/Cooper rally to win 5-2 in the Section 6AA quarterfinals Saturday at Plymouth Ice Center.
The Trojans’ Noelle Noble scored on the first shot of the game 33 seconds into the first period.
Claire Freed and Ava Hansen also scored as Wayzata jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period.
Armstrong/Cooper played better from there. Claire Hanson knocked a rebound in to beat the buzzer ending the second period to pull the Wings within 3-1 after two periods.
Natalie Staples had her centering pass deflect off a Wayzata stick and in as Armstrong/Cooper pulled within 3-2 in the third.
Wayzata though pulled away by scoring the next two, with Noble netting her second of the game on a powerplay and Julia Ostapeic sealing it with a shorthanded goal.
Third seed Wayzata now faces second seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the semifinals Wednesday at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis.
