Wayzata Girls Basketball Earns First Road Win at Hopkins in Over 25 Years
Wayzata girls basketball had only defeated Hopkins five times in the last 22 years and never as the visiting team.
On Tuesday, the Trojans earned their sixth win vs. the Royals in that time and their first at Hopkins since December 18, 1998, beating Hopkins 73-70.
The Royals led by four points at halftime, but led by Sophie Hawkinson’s 19 points the Trojans were able to storm back and pick up a big Section 6AAAA and Lake Conference win.
Annika Kieser added 13 points and Allie Berns chipped in 10. Six Trojans scored seven or more points.
The Royals were led by Lauren Hillesheim, who poured in 16 points. Erma Walker (16) and Liv Bell (13) also scored in double-figures.
Wayzata advances to 12-4 on the season and 4-1 in Lake Conference play. Hopkins drops to 12-4 and 2-1 in the Lake.
The new Class AAAA state rankings came out Wednesday with Hopkins dropping from first to second and Wayzata moving up from number seven to five. Maple Grove is ranked first in AAAA.
