Wayzata Girls Basketball Beats Top-Ranked Hopkins
Third-ranked Wayzata edged top-ranked Hopkins 55-53 in a matchup of two of the state’s best girls basketball teams.
Wayzata had the lead for much of the first half before Hopkins surged to take a 27-25 lead into the halftime break.
The Royals kept the momentum in the second half, building a lead that briefly reached 11 points.
Wayzata charged back, tying the game and then taking the lead. They went up by six with about two minutes to play.
Then it was the Royals’ turn to rally; they scored six straight, capped by Liv McGill’s spinning layup with 13 seconds left to tie the score 53-53.
Abby Krzewinski hit two free throws to give Wayzata the lead back, and McGill’s last driving attempt wouldn’t fall in the final seconds as Wayzata held on for the win.
It’s Wayzata’s first win over Hopkins since January of 2018.
