Wayzata Cross Country Teams Headed to Nationals
The Wayzata boys and girls cross country teams both won their second big meet in two weeks to qualify for the Nike National Meet next month in Oregon.
The Trojans teams brought home championship team trophies on November 5th at the Minnesota State High School meet in Northfield, then each finished first at the Nike Cross Regionals Heartland meet on November 13th in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The Wayzata boys finished first, ahead of Stevens Point (WI), Dowling Catholic (IA) and others. Hamza Mohamed was the Trojans’ top finisher, placing 20th overall. Tyler Kissell and Parker Dietrick also set personal best times for the season.
The Trojans’ girls’ team, led Abbey Nechanicky, easily won the girls’ meet. Nechanicky, one of the top prep distance runners in the country, won the Heartland race one week after capturing gold at the MSHSL meet. Teegan Anderson and Grace Mignone also placed in the top 35 for Wayzata.
Both teams now head to Portland, Oregon for the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) meet December 3rd. Individual and club qualifiers from eight regional championships will compete to be crowned national champion at the meet.
