Wayzata Boys Basketball Tops Park Center for State Title
The Wayzata boys’ basketball team won its second state championship in three seasons with a 75-71 overtime win over Park Center in the Class AAAA title game.
The Trojans trailed by 10 points midway through the second half before rallying to tie the game 66-all at the end of the regulation.
Park Center’s Cash Chavis missed a shot in traffic in the final seconds of regulation that would have given the Pirates a second straight state title.
Wayzata (27-4) outscored Park Center (28-3) 9-5 in the four-minute overtime.
Jackson McAndrew scored 25 points, many of them late in the second half and overtime, and Hayden Tibbits added 18 for the Trojans.
Wayzata played without starting guard and captain Spencer Hall, who was hurt late in the second half of the Trojans’ state tournament semifinal win over Lakeville North.
CJ O’Hara netted 21 points and Chavis 16 to lead the Pirates.
Chavis and Jackson Fowlkes were named to the Class AAAA all-tournament team. McAndrew and Tibbits were selected from Wayzata.
Park Center beat Wayzata in last year’s state championship game.
