Wayzata Boys Basketball Rallies to Beat Hopkins in 6AAAA Final
The Wayzata boys’ basketball team rallied from down 12 points in the second half to beat Hopkins 71-66 and secure the program’s third straight Section 6AAAA championship.
The Trojans trailed by 10 at halftime and for the first several minutes of the second half before beginning their rally.
Hayden Tibbits led Wayzata in scoring with 23 points with Jackson McAndrew adding 13 and Spencer Hall 12. Jake Berkland scored seven points off the bench in the second half and was part of a team defensive effort that finally slowed down Hopkins in the closing minutes.
Vincent Hillesheim scored 19 points to lead a balanced Hopkins scoring attack. The Royals played a strong first half, shooting well and holding a potent Wayzata scoring team to just 24 points at halftime.
Hopkins finishes the season with a 19-9 record with three of the losses coming against Wayzata.
The Trojans (24-4), ranked third in the state, will find out Saturday morning their opponent for the state Class AAAA quarterfinals.
Those games will be played Tuesday at Target Center.
