Wayzata Baseball Blanks Hopkins, Remains Perfect in Section 6AAAA
Two runs is all it took for Wayzata baseball to advance on in the Section 6AAAA semifinal game against Hopkins, as the Trojans shut out the Royals 2-0.
Wayzata scored its first run of the game when Michael Reem was walked with bases loaded in the bottom of the first bringing home Matthew Berkland.
Neither team scored in the next three innings, but there were several great defensive plays made. Wayzata’s Gaard Swenson made a diving catch in the second inning and Hopkins’ Ethan Sawatsky was a part of two separate doubles plays in the second and fourth innings.
The Royals had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth with two outs, but Riley Leatherman (6 2/3 IP, 4 K’s, 5 hits allowed) came up with a big strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Trojans move on to the section final Wednesday at Braemar Park in Edina.
Hopkins will play in an elimination game on Saturday.
