Providence Academy Girls Basketball Wins State Tournament Opener
The top-seeded Providence Academy girls basketball team beat Montevideo 68-55 to win its state Class AA tournament opener Wednesday.
Maddyn Greenway scored 21 points while Grace Counts added 19 for a Lions’ team that led most of the night and forced 21 turnovers.
The Thunder Hawks, making their first state tournament appearance in school history, closed a 10-point halftime deficit to three points midway through the second half but got no closer.
Avery Koenen scored 25 points and added 14 rebounds for Montevideo (25-4).
The Lions (27-4), who finished as state-runner up in 2021, play Albany in the state semifinals Friday night at Williams Arena.
Albany beat Providence 57-43 in the AA final last April.
