Matt Lombardi Leaves Maple Grove Football
After 13 seasons and 102 wins, Matt Lombardi is leaving Maple Grove High School as a teacher and the team’s head football coach. Lombardi recently resigned his teaching position, effective at the end of the school year.
“It’s really no one’s fault,” Lombardi told CCX Sports. “I didn’t make this decision, life did…There’s a time and a place where it’s time to move on.”
Though he could have continued coaching at the school, Lombardi late last week accepted a teaching and coaching position at Minnetonka High School, where he will serve as the football team’s defensive coordinator.
Lombardi’s Maple Grove teams appeared in the state playoffs seven times in his tenure with back-to-back appearances in the Prep Bowl.
Maple Grove finished as state Class 6A runner-up in 2021 and then capped an undefeated 2022 season with a state championship win over Rosemount.
Maple Grove school administration told CCX that the district’s “standard hiring process will be followed to select the next head coach for Crimson Football, which could take several weeks.”
