Maple Grove’s Danny Nelson Picked by Islanders in NHL Draft
Maple Grove resident Danny Nelson didn’t have to wait long to hear his name called on day two of the NHL draft.
Nelson was selected in the second round Thursday morning with the 49th overall pick by the New York Islanders.
Nelson played for the U.S. U-18 team in the National Development Team Program last season.
The 6’3″ 210-pounder is projected as a center but has experience as a defenseman as well.
He played for Maple Grove High School as a sophomore, scoring 20 goals with 20 assists as a defenseman.
Nelson, who will turn 18 in early August, has committed to play college hockey at Notre Dame.
