Maple Grove Softball Edges Anoka in Extra Innings
The Maple Grove softball team edged Anoka 2-1 in eight innings in a good matchup Thursday.
Pitchers Maddie Whilm of Maple Grove and Avery Woullet of Anoka made it tough to score.
Some key defensive plays, especially by Anoka, helped keep the game scoreless until the fifth.
The Tornadoes scored as Wuollet singled to left in the top of the fifth.
Lead runner Maddy Freking stopped at third, but trail runner Brooklyn Jones got in a rundown, allowing Freking to score.
Maple Grove tied it on a sacrifice fly by Katelyn Kasper in the bottom of the sixth.
The winning run came in the eighth as Dani Strom singled to left to score Alissa Wernz with the winning run.
Maple Grove improved to 10-4 with the win, while Anoka dropped to 9-5.
