Maple Grove Girls Hockey Rallies to Win Section 5AA Title
The Maple Grove girls hockey team stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to stun Centennial/Spring Lake Park with a 6-3 win in the Section 5AA championship game.
Teagan Kulenkamp’s shorthanded goal midway through the second period put the Cougars up 3-0 and it looked like they would repeat as section champ.
Maple Grove responded with goals from freshmen Maddie Elfstrand and Harper Wieneke in the second period to pull within 3-2 with a period to play.
The Crimson quickly tied the game 3-3 as Grace Erickson scored on a 5-on-3 powerplay early in the third.
It stayed that way for much of a dramatic third period until Kelsey Olson broke the deadlock with just under four minutes to play for Maple Grove.
Bella Shipley added two late goals, including an empty-netter, as the Crimson tallied four goals in the third to pull away for the win.
Unseeded Maple Grove drew top seed Minnetonka in the state class AA quarterfinals Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
