Maple Grove Football Season Ends with Loss to Lakeville South
The Maple Grove football team saw its dream of back-to-back state titles come to an end with a 49-31 loss to Lakeville South in the state Class 6A quarterfinals.
Though the Crimson had 388 yards of offense on the night, the defense couldn’t stop the Cougars.
Lakeville South’s first-team offense scored touchdowns on all seven of their possessions as the Cougars racked up 518 yards rushing.
Junior running back Griffen Dean rushed for 286 yards and six touchdowns while Nic Swanson ran for 180 yards and a touchdown.
James Engle led Maple Grove with 121 yards rushing and two touchdowns, ending his season with a single-season school record of 26 rushing touchdowns.
Crimson quarterback Kaden Harney finished his prep career by accounting for three touchdowns- one rushing, one passing, and one receiving- on a pass from Engle.
The loss snapped Maple Grove’s 23-game winning streak as they finished the season 10-1.
Lakeville South (9-2) now plays Moorhead in the 6A semifinals Friday night at U.S. Bank Stadium.
