Maple Grove Falls to Blake in State Boys Hockey Opener
The Maple Grove boys hockey team lost a heartbreaker to Blake 7-5 in the state class AA quarterfinals.
Maple Grove grabbed 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first period, with Joe Miller scoring a pair for Blake.
The Bears netted the only goal of the second period to take a 3-2 lead.
The third period was a wild one.
After Sam Jacobs tied the game on a rebound goal for Maple Grove, the Bears struck in an unusual way.
Miller scored on a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway to make it 4-3. The Bears added another for a 5-3 lead.
Maple Grove stormed back with goals from Tyler Oakland and Joshua Giuliani to even the score at 5-5.
Blake got a power play goal from defenseman Will Svenddal and added an empty net goal for the 7-5 final score.
