Maple Grove Boys Hockey Tops # 1 Wayzata
The Maple Grove boys hockey team skated past top-ranked Wayzata to win a 4-3 thriller in the third round of the Premiere Holiday Classic in the Grove tournament at Maple Grove Community Center.
Maple Grove scored a pair of goals in the latter part of the second period to break a scoreless tie and take a 2-0 lead into the third period.
The final period was a wild one.
Wayzata scored twice in 25 seconds midway through the period to tie the game 2-2.
Just over a minute later, Maple Grove’s Blake Steenerson tallied twice in 16 seconds to restore a two-goal advantage for the Crimson at 4-2.
Brooks Gengler scored with 3:24 to play to pull the Trojans within 4-3 but they couldn’t get the equalizer and Maple Grove held on for the win.
It reverses an earlier loss to Wayzata for the Crimson at the CCX Turkey Trot tournament Thanksgiving weekend.
Maple Grove won all three of its games at the Classic in the Grove event to improve to 9-2-0 this season.
Wayzata is now 8-1-1.
