Maple Grove Boys Hockey Beats Rogers for Section 5AA Title
The Maple Grove boys hockey team is headed back to the state tournament after beating Rogers 4-2 in the Section 5AA championship game.
The Crimson head to state for the third straight season and fifth time overall.
Finn Brink opened the scoring on a pass from Landen Gunderson 11:30 into the first period.
Maple Grove pushed the lead to 2-0 early in the second on a powerplay goal from Josh Giuliani.
Rogers scored a powerplay goal as Sam Ranallo got the Royals on the board with 2:24 left in the second period.
Gunderson answered 40 seconds later to give Maple Grove a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Rogers pulled within one again as Hogan Sinjem scored from the circle to make it 3-2 with plenty of time left.
Once again Maple Grove had an answered as Bennett Glad beat a Rogers defenseman to a loose puck to score for a 4-2 lead.
Crimson goalie Toby Hopp made some key stops down the stretch to preserve the win.
Hopp finished with 31 saves.
